A great number of consumers feed their pets commercial dog food, and are unaware of how to prepare and the benefits of homemade dog food. Pet food manufacturers spend millions a year on advertising, control what veterinarians learn at vet school about nutrition, and on campaigns about the dangers of a raw diet or homemade dog food.

When feeding raw meat or cooked meat, vary the protein source for your dog. Use protein sources such as chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, liver, fish, and venison. If your dog is allergic to a certain protein source, avoid that type. Find organic meats that isn't polluted with chemicals used on many factory farms.

Homemade dog food must be a proper balance of protein, fats, fiber, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.
AAFCO recommends that adult dogs eat a minimum of
  • 18% protein (22% for reproduction and growth)
  • 5% fat (8% for reproduction and growth)

Use fresh ingredients that can provide a good balance of nutrition such as:
  • Fresh meats - chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, liver, fish, and venison
  • Carrots, broccoli, asparagus, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, green beans, okra, pumpkin, and squash (Vegetables can be raw or cooked)
  • Bananas
  • Whole grains like oats and brown rice
  • Eggs
  • Potatoes

The following ingredients are harmful for your dog and should be avoided:
  • Bacon or bacon drippings (too much fat)
  • Ham (too much fat)
  • Onions or onion powder
  • Pepper
  • Beans or bean derivatives (including soy)
  • Pork
  • Grapes
  • Salt
  • Raisins
  • Raw garlic
  • Spicy foods
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus foods
  • Sugar and brown sugar
  • Tomatoes (too acidic)
  • ANY dairy products (plain yogurt is okay), including:
    • Cheese
    • Milk
    • Butter
    • Chocolate - contains theobromine which can be lethal to dogs in large enough quantities

Note that fruit is okay, but too much of it can cause a loose stool.

To add more homeopathic nutrition to your dog's meal,  add to all homemade recipes:

2 cups brewer's yeast, 1 cup lecithin granules, 1/4 cup kelp powder, 4 tbsp. bone meal powder and 1,000mg vitamin C.
